Turkey Trot 2010

Posted: October 13, 2010 by sarahbod in RACES, run, Vancouver

Who signs up for a 10km race the day after stuffing themselves with obscene amounts of carbohydrates? That would be Brad and I. Talk about carb loading!!  Thankfully our honorary piraterunner, Fiona had a good nights sleep and didn’t fall victim to the overeating or the too many pumpkin ale’s. I’ve actually haven’t needed that much water during a 10km run…ever!

Three's company pre-race...thankfully we are not related to the Cullens or we would be blinging outta control!

It was a beautiful morning! The race started at 8:30 and it was 8 degrees and sunny! So much better than the predicted rain!  The route was beautiful and flat and took us around False creek. Unfortunately, neither Brad or I finished within our time goals…but, Fiona did!!!

Brad: 59:54

After the race … tired and feelin a little rough the three of us headed home where Brad and I had to tackle the mess from the Thanksgiving dinner the night prior.

Just what we wanted to do on our holiday Monday!! Fun!

Now comes decision time. Fall classic 1/2 marathon or not!?!? To be determined. SB

Turkey trot in 3 more sleeps!

Think I’m more excited about engorging myself with turkey on Sunday with 11 of my closet friends but lets pretend I’m looking forward to Monday’s 10km run.  Funnily enough I’m just as nervous for this run as the 1/2 marathon. Unsure why because I generally run a 10km or more a week. I think it’s because the word “race’ is involved. Or maybe the fact that we’ll be wearing time chips. Talk about keeping us honest!!

It's the turkey trot RACE! ... Get your mind outta the gutter!

My girlfriend Fiona is joining Brad and I for the run and we plan to make the most of it!  My right knee is still sore and I just read the following article … gotta love internet self diagnosing! Maybe I’ll take one more day off of running…ok, maybe two. 😉 SB

I'll just pretend Aunt Gerty is chasing me during the race!!!

Running for Reese.

Running … I’m losing hope. Thinking I will never ever love it. Today’s run: 8km – 43:53 The entire run was tough. Cardio wise, great! Endurance, good! Boredom? At an all time high!!! The only thing that really kept me going was the hope that I may see Reese running along with me on the seawall. You may think I’m kidding. I am absolutely not kidding. I wanted to quit after the first km and every km after that. Miss Witherspoon is in town filming her latest movie and as we all know (or maybe just us celebrity gossip addicts) she is an avid runner. Thought she might be out enjoying the fresh ocean air.

She makes running look like so much fun!!!! (hmmm ... she IS an Oscar winning actress)

I’ve decided that I need to change up my routes. Less seawall, more hills, sprint training, trail running etc. So I’ll be hitting up my friend Stacey over at Get Fit Chicks! for some much needs motivation and guidance. Check out her blog….it’s worth a visit!

How cute is she rockin out in downtown Van City! ( Note: She actually carries her sneakers around with her!?! She’s hard core!)

As for today…no sightings. Just a sore knee and a much needed glass of wine. Cheers to frozen peas! SB

Fell off the blogging train.

I’m going to make this quick. I have been running … just not blogging. Spending too much time on Perezhilton. (Lindsay’s escapades have been far more interesting then even my last running experience!)

This week I took on more runs around the beautiful seawall. Across several bridges….check out this veiw!! I took a quick break on the Granville bridge to snap this shot on Thursday. Couldn’t help myself.

A perfect excuse to take a short breather after 10km.

As for today, I checked out the yoga show at Canada place. I had the opportunity to visit my friend Susanne (She’s pretty much a celebrity here in Vancouver, in every Semperviva ad out there.) I also picked up two things I’m excited about:

1)  A passport to Prana. It’s a multi studio yoga pass that was $30, and allows one free visit at 30+ studios in Vancouver and surrounding area. (I also picked one up for Brad, nothing says love like side by side downward dogs.) I’ve really wanted to incorporate yoga into my training on a regular basis and this will allow us to check out a few different studios and it was only $30 bucks!!

2) Udo’s oil (3.6.9 blend) which is a certified organic, sustainable and fish free blend of plant-sourced oils. It is apparently great for many different things.

The perfect 3.6.9 blend?!

A few of the reported benefits include:

-increased musclar endurance

-increased cardio endurance … run farther, faster and longer! (If this is true, I will be one happy piraterunner!)

-plus many more!!

Figure we will incorporate it into our smoothies, salad dressings etc. I’ll let you know how it goes. SB

One for the history books.

Posted: September 27, 2010 by sarahbod in run, running gear, Vancouver

Didn’t want to run today or yesterday … or Friday. This is why my scheduled run for Friday actually took place today. Better late than never though. So, today I ran 10.13km in 1:02:11. Not my greatest 10km run but I will blame the extra few minutes on my saving a crack head from near death. I wish I was kidding. It is a story that will trump all of my running experiences.

As I was beginning to climb the stairs leading to the Burrard street bridge I notice that half way up there was a young guy standing over a woman who was obviously having trouble standing. As I approached she kept saying she was sorry to me. Sorry for what I am still unsure. She honestly looked like she was going to pass out. So, being a small town girl at heart I offered her water. No need to worry … my water bottle did not come anywhere near her or her mouth. I pretty much just doused her as per her request.  Sick! She seemed to come to after the water and carried on her merry way to do God knows what!

Needless to say…the run will go down in the history books. Gotta love Vancouver! Ha! Now for the real highlight of day…new running gloves!!!

Much like a crow I am attracted to all things shiny. pretty!

They go so well with my iFitness running belt I bought in Anaheim … oh, and I added the water bottles. 9.99 each from the running room. Do I dare say it? Bring on the colder weather … I wanna wear my new gloves! SB

Running in the rain.

Posted: September 25, 2010 by sarahbod in run, running gear, Vancouver

Thursday after work I set out for an 8km run around the seawall, in the pouring rain. Much like Gene Kelly I made the most of it. I wasn’t singing per say but definitely depended on my playlist to keep me going. I found it hard to really get in the right head space. Squinting to keep the rain out of my eyes, dodging puddles and running with soaking wet shoes. I did however enjoy the temperature as I am not a huge fan of running in the heat.

Singing in the rain may be glorious..running, not so much.

I know that I will be doing a lot of running in the rain. I do live in Vancouver and I have lots of rain to look forward to over the next few months. I can live with that, considering the average temperature all winter is 5 degrees!

So now for my running in the rain wish list:

1)running gloves – my fingers were freezing for the first few km’s. Lululemon has a great pair for $26.00

2) cap – so I’m not blinded by the rain.

3) maybe a second pair of runners -They still weren’t dry the following morning.

So, off to the running room and lululemon I go…yay, shopping! SB

One for the road.

Tonight I set out on my last run before “the run”. I procrastinated for a while at work and then decided I had better get my lazy butt going, considering it’s starting to get dark so much earlier. I started off the run across the Cambie bridge and was lucky enough to catch the end of the sunset, beautiful!

Pink sky at night...sailors delight! Good news for the piraterunners!

My 10km run also took me past BC place which is receiving a face lift a.k.a. a retractable roof that is costing 458 million dollars!!!

A little blurry...could not stop running!

I felt pretty good throughout my run, which surprised me really. I haven’t been out since before my Vegas trip!  People have told me time and again that running is really mind over matter. This is totally true!! I completed an hour long run feeling as though I could go for much longer….probably not true…but I told myself I could and that is what I will continue to tell myself until Sunday. Now that the physical training is over, let the brainwashing begin!!!! SB
